This World Soil Day, Yeo Valley Organic is looking back to when “we soiled our pants” all in the name of science in case you missed it the first time.

We called upon Tom White, Regenerative Organic Farming Project Manager to help raise awareness about taking care of our soils.

Our mission? To get Tom to bury some very fetching Yeo Valley Organic cotton pants to test the health of our soil. Did you know that there are millions of soil microorganisms that live amongst the roots of our plants?

Through this unusual soil test, the microbes in the soil will devour our undies, leaving just the elastic waistband, as organic cotton pants are biodegradable.

This year’s World Soil Day theme is “Soils: Where food begins,” which aims to raise awareness of the importance of maintaining healthy ecosystems and human well-being by addressing the growing challenges in soil management.

Just as people have a microbiome, the soil beneath our feet has one too, and it may have a surprising influence on food and wellness.

Experts believe that the microbes found in soil can have a big impact on the nutritional content of our food. What’s more, the plants that we eat and the dirt we come into contact with may also directly fortify our own gut microbiomes.

We’ll be leaving our pants in the ground for a year and will let you know what we find from our soil in 2023.
